Mitigation of methane and trace gas emissions through a large-scale active biofilter system at Glatved landfill, Denmark

چکیده

Biocover systems are a cost-effective technology utilised to mitigate methane (CH4) and trace gas emissions from landfills. A full-scale biofilter system was constructed at Glatved landfill, Denmark, consisting of three biofilters with total area 3950 m2. Landfill collected mainly shredder waste cells mixed ambient air fed actively into the biofilter, resulting in an average load 60–75 g m?2 d?1 for CH4 0.15–0.21 gases (e.g., aromatics, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), aliphatic hydrocarbons). The initial surface screening showed uneven distribution system, elevated concentrations were observed close inlet. Both positive negative fluxes, ranging ?0.36 4.25 d?1, measured across biofilter. Total between ?0.005 0.042 emission flux individual compounds generally small (10?8 10?3 d?1). Vertical concentration profiles that oxidation easily degradable such as aromatics hydrocarbons happened aerobic zones, while CFCs degraded anaerobic zone inside compost layer. In addition, oxidation/degradation also occurred layer, which contributed significantly overall mitigation efficiency system. Overall, efficiencies nearly 100% both gases, it might have potential work under higher loads.

Mitigation of methane emissions in a pilot-scale biocover system at the AV Miljø Landfill, Denmark: 1. System design and gas distribution.

Greenhouse gas mitigation at landfills by methane oxidation in engineered biocover systems is believed to be a cost effective technology, but so far a full quantitative evaluation of the efficiency of the technology in full scale has only been carried out in a few cases. A third generation semi-passive biocover system was constructed at the AV Miljø Landfill, Denmark. The biocover system was fe...

Coal-Packed Methane Biofilter for Mitigation of Green House Gas Emissions from Coal Mine Ventilation Air

Methane emitted by coal mine ventilation air (MVA) is a significant greenhouse gas. A mitigation strategy is the oxidation of methane to carbon dioxide, which is approximately twenty-one times less effective at global warming than methane on a mass-basis. The low non-combustible methane concentrations at high MVA flow rates call for a catalytic strategy of oxidation. A laboratory-scale coal-pac...

Estimation and modeling of gas emissions in municipal landfill (Case study: Landfill of Jiroft City)

One of the major factors, contributing to the emission of greenhouse gases in the environment is generation of pollutant gases in municipal landfills. As for the design and building of a gas collecting system, it is necessary to properly estimate the amount and type of the landfill emissions. By means of LandGEM model, this study predicts the amount and type of the landfill gases, produced for ...

Lateral gas transport in soil adjacent to an old landfill: factors governing emissions and methane oxidation.

Field investigations of lateral gas transport and subsequent emissions in soil adjacent to an old landfill in Denmark were conducted during a 1-year period. A significant seasonal variation in the emissions with high carbon dioxide and low methane fluxes in the summer (May to October) was observed. This was attributed to methane oxidation. Diurnal measurements during a drop in barometric pressu...
